I AM THE PEOPLE | OPENING 28 JUNE

Published on: 16 June, 2023

I Am the People
28 June – 12 November 2023
Wednesday – Sunday 10am-5pm

The artists in this exhibition offer their nuanced perspectives, highlighting both the struggles and the aspirations of different groups within Chinese society. Whether we are viewing the world from the perspective of a factory worker in Guangzhou or a wealthy entrepreneur in Beijing, cutting across all boundaries is the need for harmony and belonging. Uniting the divide; between the poverty stricken and the politicians, labourers and ethnic minorities, clubbers and cowboys, is the rallying cry – I AM THE PEOPLE.

The Folk Memory Project – Now Live!

Published on: 1 June, 2023

Documentary filmmaker Wu Wenguang is widely considered a pioneer of modern Chinese independent film. He launched The Memory Project with the aim to collect oral histories from survivors of the Great Famine, which devastated rural China between 1958 to 1961. Home to this immense project is Caochangdi Workstation, Wu’s studio in suburban Beijing. Over 150 young filmmakers have participated, visiting 246 villages in 20 provinces, and interviewing more than 1100 elderly villagers. Personal accounts and fading memories of the Cultural Revolution, the Great Leap Forward, and the Four Cleanups Movement are preserved – ensuring that these stories are not forgotten.

Shuo Shu 说书 – One Month Left

Published on: 14 April, 2023

Last Day: Sunday 14 May 2023

Visit us soon, before we close the books on Shuo Shu 说书 (Storytelling).

The 29 artists in Shuo Shu 说书 map the evolution of the story from timeless myths and literary romances to political propaganda and modern-day censorship. Artists become shapeshifters, and their stories twist and turn to fit within codes and secret messages. Whilst a closed mind is like a closed book, stories reveal themselves to those who are open.
