‘A Blueprint for Ruins’ reverberates with the shadows of the dispossessed within China’s urban metamorphosis. The artworks guide us toward the remnants of memories woven into the very fabric of each structure, even as the walls crumble. As the artist Hu Weiyi poignantly writes: “It’s as if every abandoned building, about to disappear, is attempting to sing its last note, and eventually they will come together to form a requiem for an era.”
The White Rabbit Gallery was established in 2009 to share Judith Neilson’s private collection of 21st-century Chinese art with the public. ‘A Blueprint for Ruins’ will be the 28th exhibition in the Gallery, which is a registered charitable institution funded solely by Judith Neilson.
‘A Blueprint for Ruins’, curated by David Williams, opens on 20 December 2023 and runs until 12 May 2024.

I Am the People – Last Day: Sunday 12 November 2023
The artists in this exhibition offer their nuanced perspectives, highlighting both the struggles and the aspirations of different groups within Chinese society. Whether we are viewing the world from the perspective of a factory worker in Guangzhou or a wealthy entrepreneur in Beijing, cutting across all boundaries is the need for harmony and belonging. Uniting the divide; between the poverty stricken and the politicians, labourers and ethnic minorities, clubbers and cowboys, is the rallying cry – I AM THE PEOPLE.

“The images used in the creation of “Evening Light” are selected from daily photos taken from 2020 to 2022, and the final work is based on this. The whole society was in a special state of life over the three years, and so was my life. During this period, people spent the majority of time in a fixed area, usually in a fixed residence. As the sphere of activities was reduced, I had more time to pay attention to my surroundings and found some vivid “surprises”.” Huang Xiaoliang

It was such a pleasure having Hailun Ma visit the gallery last week and speak to us about her work! Hailun Ma’s artworks can be seen across Level 1 of our current exhibition, I Am the People.
Hailun Ma’s creative works open a new window for the viewers to approach Xinjiang and help them understand this region in a new perspective. Hailun Ma returned to Xinjiang in 2018 after living and studying in New York since 2013. She decided to use her lens to record the beautiful ‘hometown’ from her memory. With the help of her family, Hailun visited many villages around Kashgar, Akqi, and Xayar. Hailun has captured the unique yet easily overlooked experiences of the multi-ethnic compact lives in Xinjiang through her lens and presented the photos in a beautiful and respectful way.
