Chen Yu-Lin was born in 1981 in Yanshuei (also spelled Yanshui), an old district of Tainan, in southern Taiwan. He studied sculpture, graduating with an MFA from Tainan National University of the Arts, but after graduation he turned to photography to document Taiwanese folk culture. Chen participates in numerous public art projects in Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong, identifying his work as a form of socially engaged photographic practice focused on cultural identity and the preservation of Taiwanese faith traditions. He lives and works in Yanshuei.
