Cao Xiaodong

Bio

Born in in 1961 in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, Cao Xiaodong studied at the Industry Design College of Jiangnan University in Wuxi, graduating in 1982. During the ‘85 New Wave’ art movement, Cao was a key member of the ‘Red Brigade’ – an influential avant-garde artists’ group based in Nanjing. His paintings drew upon cultural differences between China and the west at a specific time in history. Based on old newspaper photos, his paintings reference western cultural icons and their Chinese counterparts, by means of highly controlled, pixelated patterns applied with very thin paint. Cao has exhibited widely within and beyond China, including ‘Ctrl Shift’, Beijing (2012); ‘The 25th Asia International Art Exhibition’, Mongolia (2010); ‘Quotations from 7 Xi’, Beijing (2010); ‘Stars of China – Past and Present’, Holland (2009); and ‘Save As Exhibition: Contemporary Chinese Art Born of Ancient Traditions’, USA (2009), etc. His works are held in public and private collections across Asia, Europe and the United States. Cao Xiaodong lives and works in Beijing.
