Guan Xiao was born in 1983 in Chongqing. Seeking a broader and more interdisciplinary education than was available in Chinese art academies at that time, she studied film, graduating with a BA in Directing from the Communication University of China, Beijing in 2006. Today, her work is characterised by juxtapositions of ‘high’ art and popular culture, eastern and western aesthetics, the past and the future, mixing found objects and images with crafted materials. Her work has been exhibited widely within China and internationally, and was selected for the 57th Venice Biennale, ‘Viva Arte Viva’, in 2017. Solo exhibitions include ‘Products Farming’, Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn, Germany and ‘Fiction Archives Project’, Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, USA (both 2019); ‘Par-dela L’horizon Liquide’, Le Lieu Unique, Nantes, France; ‘Transantiquity’, Galeria Municipal Do Porto, Porto, Portugal and ‘Individuality has completely vanished – only traces become memories that linger in the recesses of consciousness, Kunsthalle Winterthur, Winterthur, Switzerland (all 2018); ‘Living Sci-Fi, under the red stars’, Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin, Germany (2017); ‘Guan Xiao – Elastic Sleep’, K11 Art Foundation, Shanghai; ‘Guan Xiao: Flattened Metal’ in association with K11 Art Foundation, ICA, London, UK; ‘Weather Forecast’, Jeu de Paume, Paris, France; ‘Weather Forecast’, CAPC musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France and ‘Emotional Supply Chain’, Zabludowicz Collection, London, UK (all 2016).
