Ni Youyu was born in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, in 1984. He studied Chinese painting at Shanghai University College of Fine Arts between 2003 and 2007, where his particular focus was on Song and Yuan Dynasty painting; he believes this laid the foundation for his artistic development. With solo shows in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Taipei and Berlin, and work selected for group shows across the globe, Ni Youyu has established an international reputation. He was awarded ‘Best Young Artist’ in the 2014 Contemporary Chinese Art Awards and in 2019 established his reputation with a solo show at Shanghai’s Yuz Museum. Ni Youyu lives and works in Shanghai.
