Bio

Born in 1978 in Nanjing, Xu Qu studied at the Nanjing University of the Arts, graduating in 2002. He travelled to Germany to undertake further study at the Braunschweig University of Art from 2004 – 2008, where he was taught by the Fluxus-inspired Swiss artist, John Armleder. Returning to China, Xu developed a practice that crosses diverse fields and forms, ranging from video to sculpture, painting, performance and installation. His work examines how human desires and dreams intersect with social organisation and surveillance, and how people seek to determine their own fate. Xu’s work has been shown in group and solo exhibitions within and beyond China, including in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Brussels and London. Xu Qu lives and works in Beijing.
