Born in 1974 in Beijing, Zheng Bo is an ecoqueer artist of ethnic Bai heritage. Zheng uses they/them pronouns. As an artist, writer, and teacher, committed to socially and ecologically engaged art, his practice investigates the past and imagines the future from the perspectives of marginalized communities and marginalized plants. They collaborate with dancers, farmers, and scientists to cultivate kinship with plants: ferns in Taiwan, moss in Scandinavia, date palms in the Arabian Peninsula. Their ecological practice, arising from more-than-human intimacy, contributes to the emergence of a planetary indigeneity. These relations are aesthetic, erotic, and political. For them, art does not arise from human creativity, but more-than-human vibrancy. Zheng Bo graduated with a BA in Computer Science and Fine Arts from Amherst College, a MA in 1999, a MFA from the Chinese University in Hong Kong in 2005, and a PhD in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester, NY. Between 2010-13 they taught in the School of Inter-Media Art, China Academy of Art Hangzhou. They currently live and work on Lantau Island, Hong Kong.
