Chen Haiyan, one of the leading printmakers in China, was born in Fushun, Liaoning Province in 1955. In 1984, Chen completed her study in the Printmaking Department of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, now the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, where she currently teaches. Exuberantly expressive, her work fuses her devotion to traditional Chinese woodblock printing with a bold use of colour and brush marks influenced by the German Expressionists. In her early career, Chen participated in ‘Beyond the Open Door: Contemporary Paintings from the People’s Republic of China’ at USC Pacific Asia Museum, Pasadena, USA, in 1987 and ‘China/Avant-Garde’ at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in 1989. Since then, she has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions within China and globally. Her most recent exhibitions include, ‘Undersong · Secrets · Dreams · Truths · Power’, INK studio, Beijing; ‘Out of Ink – Interpretations from Chinese Contemporary Art’, Pera Museum, Istanbul; ‘From/To: The Frontier of Chinese Art Education’, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco (all 2019) and ‘Works by Chen Haiyan’ , Hanyang Art Center, Hangzhou (2018). Her works are held in many public and private collections in China, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States. Chen Haiyan lives and works in Hangzhou.
