Bio

Chen Zhe was born in Beijing in 1989 and was awarded her degree in Photography and Imaging from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 2011. Her work was immediately acclaimed: she was the recipient of the Three Shadows Award, Lianzhou Foto Festival Photographer of the Year Award, and the Inge Morath Award from the Magnum Foundation (all 2011), was nominated for the Prix Pictet in 2012, and presented with the Xitek New Talent Award in 2016. She is featured in the documentary films Chinese Viewfinders (2013) and China Through the Lens of Youth (2014). Her controversial series of works The Bearable and Bees were published as a book by Jiazazhi Press in 2016 and awarded ‘Best Photobook’ at Fotobookfestival, Kassel (2016). Chen’s work has been shown in London; in the 11th Shanghai Biennale, ‘Why Not Ask Again?’ (2016) and the Asia Pacific Triennial, Queensland Art Gallery (2018). She lives and works in Beijing.
