Born in 1981 in Hong Kong, Magdalen Wong is an artist whose practice encompasses objects, video, photography, installation, and drawing. Her current work stems from careful observation of the mundane, often working with things that are easily accessible, such as generic imageries or found objects. By concealing and accentuating specific details in the objects and imageries, she hopes to generate an alternate narrative, revealing the mystery in the ordinary and the poetics of the everyday. Wong struggled academically under Hong Kong’s stuffy education system, where perfect grades seem to be the only goal. She found relief when her family moved to the United States, where there were different definitions of what failure and success meant. Wong found academic success in the States, where she studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art before going on to earn an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduating, she landed a job as a lecturer at the newly opened Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) at Hong Kong Baptist University. She currently lives and works in Lisbon.
