Born in 1960 in Yinchuan, Ningxia Province, Mao Tongqiang graduated from the Fine Arts Department of the University of Ningxia in 1980 and from the Oil Painting Department of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now the China Academy of Art) in Hangzhou in 1986. For more than three decades he has examined Chinese history, the impacts of urbanisation and social change. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions in Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jakarta and Vienna; and in the 1st Anren Biennale (2017); the 1st Yinchuan Biennale (2016) and the 4th Guangzhou Triennial (2012). Mao Tongqiang lives and works between Yinchuan and Beijing.
