Lan Zhaoxing was born in 1977 Yuanping, Shanxi. She studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Art of Shanxi University from 1997 to 2001. Between 2006 to 2008, she spent two years in the Oil Painting postgraduate program of the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts whilst serving in the army. Lan worked in the military for about 10 years, first at an instituation isolated in mountains and then an army aviation corps on the edge of a country-level city. In 2011, she left the army at the battalion level and has been an independent artist ever since.
